Abstract

Abstract

Hypertension can progress into a hypertensive emergency that requires immediate treatment to prevent organ damage and death. Families as first responders play a crucial role in providing first aid before the patient receives medical treatment. This study aimed to analyze the effect of hypertension emergency education on family knowledge of first aid at home. The study used a pre-experimental design with a one-group pretest–posttest design conducted from February 2–April 20, 2026, in the Bungku Tengah Community Health Center (UPT) Work Area. The sample consisted of 72 family members of hypertension patients selected using a purposive sampling technique. Data were collected using a knowledge questionnaire that had been tested for validity and reliability, then analyzed using the Wilcoxon test. Before education, most respondents had moderate knowledge (43.1%), while after education, the majority were in the good category (73.6%). The mean knowledge score increased from 1.90 to 2.74. The Wilcoxon test yield  a p-value of 0.000 (p<0.05), indicating a significant effect of education on increasing family knowledge. Hypertension emergency education significantly increases family knowledge and should be integrated into community nursing services and primary health care to strengthen the family's role as first responders.
